Summary

This position involves overseeing the entire process of curating, editing, and managing the Institution’s quarterly Journal. The Journal Editor will collaborate closely with key stakeholders (particularly the PWI Technical Manager), advertisers, and article authors to ensure high-quality content, manage the design and proofing stages, coordinate with print houses, and oversee the distribution to our esteemed members.

28 hours per week

£25,000 – £30,000 FTE

Fully remote – in-person team meetings will be held a few times a year

Responsibilities

Editorial

  • Project manage the Journal process from start to finish, including enforcing deadlines and managing an annual calendar of themes, articles, and advertisements for the Journal.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for contributors, advertisers, and stakeholders involved in PWI Journal content creation and publication.
  • Work very closely with the Technical Manager to ensure technical articles are transposed accurately, and published with clear images/diagrams, correct references and suitable graphics.
  • Liaise with internal and external authors to curate, edit, and finalise articles, ensuring alignment with PWI’s editorial standards and tone of voice in line with the brand guidelines.
  • Take full responsibility for the layout, formatting, and proofing of journal content to ensure there are no errors.
  • To ensure all content follows best practice for writing engaging copy that converts through clear call to actions.

Design

  • Design a high-quality, professional Journal publication that is on brand and a high-quality representation of the Institution.
  • Create digital launch assets to promote the Journal across a range of digital channels.
  • Provide Journal contributors with designed assets to promote their Journal articles across their own digital channels.
  • Support the wider PWI team with the design of printed and digital marketing collateral for campaigns, events, products and services.

Print and mailing

  • Create print-ready design files following the required print house’s specification.
  • Liaise with the print house to manage the print and distribution of the PWI Journal to members.
  • Organise mailing schedules and oversee the logistical aspects of distributing printed editions of the Journal.
  • Responsible for ensuring the most cost-effective and reliable printing and distribution of the Journal.

Digital

  • Manage the digital Journal mailing list and create a page-turnable version to distribute electronically.
  • Update the PWI website with digital Journals, article pdfs and related promotional launch materials.
  • Work alongside the wider marketing team to promote the Journal launch and articles across a range of digital channels.

Stakeholder engagement

  • Create regular communications to key Journal stakeholders to reinforce deadlines and update the Executive Team on production status.
  • Work alongside the Marketing Manager to generate advertising revenue, whilst not compromising on the professionalism and integrity of the prestigious Journal publication.
  • Foster relationships with advertisers and the wider industry network to support journal funding and advertising goals.

Qualifications

  • A qualification or experience in Design, Art, English, Marketing or another creative subject.
  • Advanced graphic design skills, including use of full Adobe Creative Suite.

Experience

  • Managing an end-to-end publication process and liaising with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to manage a creative project within set timescales to meet deadlines.
  • Proofing content to maintain a high level of professional written and visual content in line with brand guidelines.
  • Excellent copywriting and editing skills for print, digital and press, always conveying brand identity and thinking about engaging the reader.

Qualities and attitude

  • Fluent in English; very strong reading and writing skills with excellent grammar.
  • A confident project manager with the ability to lead others to work to deadlines.
  • Strong organisation skills with meticulous attention to detail in both design and file organisation.
  • A protective brand guardian who lives and breathes brand and ensures all collateral maintains the high standard demanded by the PWI brand.
  • Excellent teamworking skills; works well with others, approachable and adaptable.
  • Positive, proactive and self-motivated.
  • Able to manage stressful situations, work under pressure and prioritise.
  • Able to self-manage and work autonomously from home, with the flexibility for regular travel within the UK to attend meetings and events as required.
